If you think generation X was the first to embrace tattoos you may be surprised to learn that Grandma might be hiding some serious ink. Actually tattoos go back pretty far in human history, taking on different meanings for different cultures. A lot of common tattoo themes like ships, roses and even Betty Boop go back generations. For instance swallow tattoos are popular today among everyone, but originally marked a successful trip for a new sailor.

15 craziest scalp tattoos 15 Craziest Scalp Tattoos

At some point these guys just stopped caring about hiding their tattoos or being subtle about their baldness. Some guys pull off looking pretty badass without hair, and an intimidating scalp tattoo doesn’t hurt their case. But it seems like some dudes are just setting out to prove that just because they don’t have hair that doesn’t mean they don’t have a sense of humor. Either way covering your head with a giant tattoo seems pretty crazy to most folks.

Check out the 15 Craziest Scalp Tattoos.

Augmented Reality Tattoos

The world’s first animated tattoos? Sort of. ThinkAnApp created software that uses a square tattoo as a marker on the skin to track where a 3D animation should appear in video. When the tattoo is viewed through a special camera a 3D animated flying dragon appears over top of it. The concept is fairly rough at the moment, but it’s a pretty cool idea and we’re curious where this technology goes.

Have you ever looked at someone and assumed that they didn’t have tattoos because they just seemed so ordinary? You never know who could be sporting some serious ink under their clothes. Illustrator Stasia Burrington demonstrates that idea with seemingly innocent girls who when undressed reveal their full body irezumi tattoos. The tattoos fit right in with traditional Japanese tattoo designs, even though they are simple and stylized. Check out Stasia’s site for more stunning Japanese inspired artwork, including another awesome Secret Yakuza piece.

We get why our friends ask us to cover our tattoos to be in their wedding. We’re not happy about it necessarily, but we understand. But we would never hide that part of who we are on our own wedding day. We’d be proud to show off our tats just like Loni & Todd. Rock n Roll Bride shared a beautiful gallery of wedding photos—tattoos, dirt bike, boots and all. Some folks may judge, but we think Loni’s floral sleeve looks stunning with her dress.

The images seem to literally pop off the skin with tons of realistic detail and cast shadows. The paintings feature common tattoo ideas like dragons and flowers.

The Body Crayon Book

February 12th, 2010

body crayon book The Body Crayon Book

Kids love to imitate adults, so tattooed parents will want to teach kids about tattoo safety and responsibility from a young age and make them wait until they’re 18 to get the rite of passage first tattoo (that’s usually awful, but hey it’s ours, so we love it). In the meantime there’s plenty of temporary body art for kids to play with. But rather than a bunch of cheesy decals from a vending machine, the Body Crayon Book lets kids come up with their own designs and draw them right on their skin. The book comes with 6 body crayons and tons of ideas for cool art. Pick one up for $15 at . Via KidCrave
